In the second half of 2026, the AI agent market has split into two clear poles. One pole is the fully-managed "digital employee" — big vendors bundle the agent, a cloud computer, models and the office toolchain, and you simply log in and assign work. The other pole is self-hosting — represented by OpenClaw, running on your own machines: 24/7 uptime, local data, and your choice of models.

This article reviews five representative products on the fully-managed side, then offers a framework for deciding "when should you self-host instead". Every fact is tagged with a source and read date (2026-08-22); prices reflect that date.

What Stands Out About Each

QoderWork (Alibaba) — Its pitch is "AI directly operates the apps and files on your computer", with DingTalk/WeChat/Feishu integrations already in place. According to reports, Eddie Wu said in an internal meeting that its DAU, weekly actives and token usage rank first among all Alibaba AI tools; in July 2026 Alibaba announced it would consolidate the enterprise platform "Wukong" and the overseas product "MuleRun" onto it as the base (see our coverage). It has the highest consolidation certainty of the five.

TraeWork (ByteDance) — An office platform grown out of the TRAE AI coding IDE. Its three-mode switching suits people who "write code and also build reports"; the mobile app works as a pocket dispatch center, sending tasks concurrently to the cloud and multiple computers.

Doubao Work Mode (ByteDance) — The lightest entry point: pick the mode inside the Doubao app and go. It reuses the multimodal and long-chain task capabilities of the Seed 2.1 family; a natural fit if you already use Doubao, but not an independent purchase decision.

WorkBuddy (Tencent) — The most unusual of the five: officially stated as fully compatible with the OpenClaw skill ecosystem, built on the same-origin CodeBuddy architecture, with models switchable among Hunyuan/DeepSeek/GLM/Kimi/MiniMax, plus enterprise accounts and auditing. For users who "want the OpenClaw skill ecosystem but don't want to deploy it themselves", it is the shortest path.

Grok Bot (xAI) — The most radical idea: every bot gets a persistent cloud computer and its own login state, so you hire AI the way you hire a remote colleague. Currently EARLY BETA for some subscribers. Notably, xAI announced this May that Grok subscriptions can now be used directly inside OpenClaw and Hermes Agent (see our coverage) — the two poles are officially connected.

When to Self-Host (the OpenClaw Path)

Three hard criteria — hitting any one makes self-hosting worth it:

  1. Data must stay local: contracts, code, and customer records cannot leave your intranet — OpenClaw runs on your own machines, with 100% data control.
  2. You need 24/7 autonomous execution + 50+ messaging channels: resident connections and automation across WeChat, Feishu, DingTalk, Telegram and more are the home turf of the OpenClaw ecosystem (13,729+ skills).
  3. You want control over models and cost: the framework is open-source and free, models are pay-as-you-go, and under heavy use it beats subscription pricing.

For the starter path see the local deployment tutorial; for an item-by-item comparison of the five managed products see the "Self-hosted vs managed office agents" group on the Compare page.

Conclusion

  • Non-technical office users and team procurement: pick one of QoderWork / TraeWork / WorkBuddy (choose by your IM ecosystem and existing subscriptions); Doubao users should just try Work Mode.
  • Heavy automation, privacy-sensitive users, developers: self-hosted OpenClaw, supplemented by managed products when needed — the two poles are already interoperable (WorkBuddy is OpenClaw-skill-compatible; Grok subscriptions work inside OpenClaw).
  • Budget-conscious experimenters: Doubao Work Mode (free start) and WorkBuddy/QoderWork (free client download) have the lowest barrier.
